Benefits of Facebook Pages to Colleges and Universities
There are many different uses to social media sites like Facebook, and Twitter. So it is no surprise that higher educational institutions are taking part in the new technology craze. With the use of these sites colleges and universities can reach a greater audience simultaneously than they have ever been able to before.
West Virginia University has recently expanded there Facebook fan page to showcase the on campus activities department. With this new addition the school is happy to be able to announce upcoming events and programs. The school announced, "We know that using social media, especially Facebook, is the best way to reach our students,” said Kim Harrison, assistant director for Student Organizations Services. “We needed to reach students where they already go—Facebook.”
The University of West Georgia shares in WVU's thought process, and also uses the popular site to reach students and to inform them on upcoming events and announcements.
An article in an educational blog also reported that seventy percent of schools use Facebook during there admissions process. The article reported that, according to Kaplan's 2010 College Admissions Survey and recently packaged an interactive site that provides students with information on degree programs and schools. However, the officials also said students' social-media profiles have generally helped them get accepted (62 percent). Still, 38 percent said students' online profiles hurt their chances.
Coaches have also used the school’s Facebook pages to reach out to potential high school students as well. The sites are valuable because they give the students a chance to get a fell for the student body and the events that are going on with the school.
Another use of Facebook for colleges is the site’s ability to reach students in a very quick manner. Most recently colleges like Virginia Tech have set up emergency alert systems on their Facebook pages that can reach students quickly if something was to happen. This article mentions “The schools’ improvement plans come after Virginia Tech was criticized for notifying students by e-mail more than two hours after the start of an April 16 shooting spree that claimed the lives of 33 people on its Blacksburg, Va., campus.”
Last but not least Facebook pages also ensure that students can continue their attachment with the university after they graduate with the many different aspects of the alumni pages that many schools now have for the students. At Stanford University, which partnered with Facebook to try out the feature early, campus representatives said they expected that its new Facebook profile would reach more people and encourage more of a conversation with the campus community than the old one.

Screencast example
In my screencast the host is teaching viewers how to embed a video from youtube into blogger. The reason I choose this video is because it is very helpful to the class and the assignments that are due during the duration of the course. I like how the video gives you steps and I feel it is very understandable.
I think it is easier to use screencast technology because the majority of people are visual learners. I rather watch and see how to complete a task rather than read numerous bullet points that blend together and can get confusing. Screencast technology is very helpful and I believe it to be a great invention in instructional tools.

Facebook vs. Myspace (Facebook Perspectives)
When Myspace was COOL
When I was in high school I had a myspace the whole time. I enjoyed being able to personalize my page by adding whatever song at the time interested me as well has having my Top Friends change with whatever mood I was in.
If you are somebody you have a FACEBOOK
When I was a freshman in college the new thing was for everyone to have a Facebook. It took me awhile to get the hang of it, but once I did I was ADDICTED. It is also a really cool way to get in contact with people who you have not seen in a long time. My new personal fav is Twitter because it is more up to date and fast moving. But at the end of the day I cannot deny I am definitely apart of the technology and social media age.
The Facebook page I enjoy the most is http://www.facebook.com/pages/Alpha-Kappa-Alpha/16963148404?ref=ts&v=wall. It keeps me up to date with everything that is going on in my sorority, and also is a way for you to see what cute new merchandise is out for you to purchase. I think that it is really cool that this new technology allows me to be connected with other members of my organization globally. It is a cool way to communicate and share information.
